A visit to Amadeus Lyceum in Utrecht
I visited the secondary school Amadeus Lyceum in Vleuten in Utrecht Holland. My aim was to fulfill a Job Shadowing task. On my first day in the school I met with sociology teacher and coordinator Erwin Verweij, who was my mentor for the week. I followed him into all his classes that week. Before going to the first class that Monday morning Erwin introduced me to some of the other teachers at Amadeus Lyceum. And we discussed the plan of the week. Later on I met with the contact person Susan Booij, and the rector Carel Konings of Amadeus Lyceum. My presence at the school was noticable both among the students and among the teachers. In the classrooms I had the opportunity to observe the teaching methods of Erwin Verweij in sociology (Maatschappijleer). It was interesting to see how this school divides the classes into private lessons in a special classroom and then into work in a domain that consists of three different classes joined together with three different teachers. It was pleasing to see how disciplined the students were and how they acted in accordance with the core values of the school; respect and self study. One of my aims was to see students at work and their sense of self study and discipline. During the week I had the opportunity to visit the Binnenhof, the parliament, in Den Haag, as part of my program as a sociology teacher.
