Psychology students visit London

For the last twelve years students in psychology courses at Borgarholtsskóli have visited the city of London with their teachers. These trips have been very meaningful for the students and they will hopefully keep on going for more years to come.

In March 2017 a group of 23 students and two teachers visited London for four days. They stayed at The Royal National Hotel at Russel Square which is located in the center of London. A unique and lively hotel with unparalleled facilities and direct London Underground link with Heathrow Airport.

There is always a planned schedule for this trip and every day has a program. The whole group was ready to travel every morning at 9 and in the evenings we went to restaurants for dinner.

The first day has an educational purpose where the group visits University College London (UCL). UCL is a world-class university; with academic strength in breadth and depth. UCL offers an enormous range of taught programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The next stop was at the Freud Museum. The Freud Museum, at 20 Mares-field Gardens in Hampstead, was the home of Sigmund Freud and his family when they escaped Austria following the Nazi annexation in 1938. It remained the family home until Anna Freud, the youngest daughter, died in 1982. The centerpiece of the museum is Freud’s study, preserved just as it was during his lifetime. Freud was a leading figure in the history of psychology. He has been influential in two related, but distinct ways. He simultaneously developed a theory of the human mind and human behavior and a clinical technique for helping people with mental disorders. One of the psychology teachers had a lecture about Freud for the whole group in the museum.

The group ended the first day by visiting London Zoo, the world’s oldest scientific zoo.

The next day half of the group went to see a football match at Loftus Road in White City, where the team Queens Park Rangers plays. Before the game the whole group had a walk through Notthing Hill Market. While the football match was going on the rest of the group went to see the British Museum and got a chance to shop at Oxford Street.

The third day is a sightseeing tour to the main attractions in London. The group had a 3-4 hours walk where they could see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Houses of Parliment, Tower Bridge, London Eye and a river cruise on the river Thames.

On the day the group left London the students have the day off. Some visit the British Museum again and others go shopping.
